It’s Insanely Popular, So “I’ve Got To Hate It”

“Why do you dislike them?”

“Just because.”

It can be a popular student at school, a celebrity, a fictional character, anything. No matter how famous and admirable, someone will come up with a reason to hate them. This reason is often, “I hate seeing everyone love them.”

In my experiences, this usually applies to societal connections and the entertainment industry. I haven’t seen, met, nor heard of anyone that actively hates Albert Einstein or Thomas Edison because they are famous. What are you going to do, reject the lightbulb?? Complain that E=mc² isn’t true?

But connections between people are flexible. It is very possible to dislike someone without people thinking you are crazy. “They’re popular,” becomes a “valid” reason for posting hate comments and ranting about your anger because of a famous celebrity.

Lately, because everyone is social distancing, many people are catching up on their favorite shows, starting new animes, listening to new albums, and more. The respective fanbases are more active than ever.

My friend recently complained to me about another close friend of ours because she hadn’t watched a certain show, but had already decided that she hated the main character and loved another side character.

It was clear that if she hadn’t been influenced by other people and formed her own opinions from actually watching the show, her opinions would likely be different.

BTS is another example of an extremely well-liked, popular band that is also disliked by a massive number of people. Using them, I will discuss this strange, twisted kind of hatred.

I have seen reasons for disliking this band, such as “their music isn’t my style,” “i’m not a fan of their choreographies,” “i don’t like their fanbase; they are way too toxic,” and “they don’t deserve the attention they get.”

If your plain and simple opinion is different, there is absolutely nothing wrong. Even if I am a fan, I wouldn’t start screaming at someone because they said the music wasn’t their cup of tea. Everyone has their own interests. Same goes for their choreographies.

I would say the third reason is understandable. Because BTS is so well-liked around the globe, there are definitely immature and obnoxious fans that express their feelings in an irritating and intolerable way. However, because it is possible to enjoy the music without getting deeply involved with the fanbase, I wouldn’t completely agree with this reason, either.

But the last reason is something else. In other words, they saying that BTS is too popular even though they are nothing special. But hating other people because you are angry and, perhaps, envious, of the love they receive from others is simply spiteful, is it not?

BTS isn’t the only case. Different artists and even characters are hated because of their popularity. If a person decides that they like a popular artist, character, or person, they are easily labelled as “basic” and “boring.”

If there is something that I truly hate, it is the fact that not everyone can enjoy whatever they want without getting backlash. Why can’t people like what they like, and do what they want if it’s not harming everyone?

Why do people have to force their beliefs on others? Why can’t others have civil conversations?

Why does love breed hate without reason?
